If you’re a swimmers or boaters, you know swimming is probably your safest sport to play.
And that’s because swimming can be dangerous, particularly for the more experienced swimmers.
But you can also take precautions if you’re just getting started.
Here are some safety tips to help you play safe.1.
Get a helmetIf you’re not swimming at the moment, you should wear a helmet at all times.
Even when you’re swimming, the water is still a dangerous place.
So if you do have a chance of getting your head in the water, you need to wear a safety mask.2.
Don’t jump overboardThere’s nothing to jump overboard.
But if you are swimming in shallow water, don’t jump or dive to get away from a friend.
Instead, get to a safe area of the pool and wait for the tide to come back in.3.
Swim with a partnerIf you know you can swim together, do it.
The more you swim together the less risk you’ll have of being separated.4.
Be careful around the poolIf you see a stranger in the pool, don, tuck in your head and swim away.
Instead of following them around, stay at the pool’s edge, where you can see them, and take them out if they make eye contact.5.
Make sure you’re safe at the gymThere are plenty of gyms and swimming pools in the world, so there’s no need to worry about getting lost in them.
If you have a swimming pool with a few doors, there’s always a safety net at the back to keep you from sliding down a slide or getting your hand in the wrong place.6.
Use a helmetAlways wear a swim mask to protect your face and neck from head and neck injuries.
But don’t put a mask on your head while swimming.
Instead put one on your body, where it will protect your eyes and face from the sun and the elements.7.
Keep a safe distanceIf you find yourself in a pool, stay far away and never go to the other side of the pools edge.
If it’s safe to do so, use the safety net to keep your legs from sliding, but never your head.8.
Wear a safety beltWhen you go swimming, wear a swimming belt.
This will help you maintain your balance, and can help you stay safe in a swimming accident.9.
Swim at least twice a dayThe sun can burn your skin, so don’t swim while you’re tan.
Instead get your swimsuit wet with water or a sprayer, and let the water run down your arms and legs to keep the sun off your skin.10.
Watch for signs of hypothermiaIf you feel hot in the sun, you might want to use a sunscreen or a water bottle to help keep you cool.11.
Don a hatThe sunburn is painful, so a hat that covers your head is a good idea.
If your hat gets caught on a rope, or you’re wearing a hat with a zipper, don the hat and keep swimming.
If a hat is caught in a bucket of water, swim in it.
