GOP lawmaker calls for new budget bill to include a plan to stop ‘dumping’ white women into poverty

A GOP lawmaker in Texas is calling for a budget bill that would force the state to stop “dumping” white women at the expense of women of color.

The proposed legislation is part of a new budget proposed by state Rep. Steve Scalise, R-LaCrosse, which includes a proposed cap on the number of white women the state can send to prison.

The measure, however, would only apply to women convicted of rape or other sexual offenses.

Scalise’s plan would also require the state’s Department of Corrections to hire more women of colour to fill positions that have traditionally been filled by white men.

The bill has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling the proposal racist and sexist.

Here are the facts.
